Understanding QR Codes: How They Work and Why They Matter

QR codes (Quick Response codes) were invented in 1994 by Denso Wave to track automotive parts. Unlike traditional barcodes that store about 20 characters, QR codes encode up to 7,089 numeric or 4,296 alphanumeric characters in a two-dimensional matrix. Today they are everywhere: restaurant menus, payment systems, boarding passes, authentication tokens, and marketing materials.

The anatomy of a QR code includes finder patterns (three large squares in corners for orientation), timing patterns (alternating modules for coordinate systems), format information (error correction level and mask pattern), and data area with Reed-Solomon error correction. QR codes offer four error correction levels: L (7% recovery), M (15%), Q (25%), and H (30%). This is why QR codes still scan when partially damaged or when logos are placed in the center.

QR codes come in 40 versions from 21x21 to 177x177 modules.
